Why One-Pot Meals Make Sense

One-pot meals have become a staple in our kitchens, not just because they’re convenient, but because they deliver big on taste with less hassle. With everything cooked in a single claypot, you don’t just save time on prep—you also cut down on washing up. For families juggling work, school, and everything in between, this means less time at the sink and more time at the dinner table.

The Magic of Claypot Cooking

Claypot cooking is a time-honored tradition across many Asian cuisines, and for good reason. Claypots naturally retain heat and distribute it evenly, allowing ingredients to cook slowly and soak up deep, rich flavors. At U-Like, we’ve crafted our claypots to meet the needs of modern kitchens while preserving this traditional method of cooking. Whether you're making a homestyle chicken rice or a spicy curry, our claypots bring out the best in every ingredient. Plus, they’re incredibly versatile—you can use them on the stovetop, in the oven, or even serve straight from pot to table. It’s functional, efficient, and beautiful all in one.

Our Favourite: Claypot Chicken Rice Recipe

One of the weeknight heroes in our kitchen is Claypot Chicken Rice. It’s a complete meal that’s fast, flavourful, and made in just one pot—our U-Like claypot.

Here’s how we do it:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups jasmine rice (rinsed)

  • 2 boneless chicken thighs (cut into bite-sized pieces)

  • 2 Chinese sausages (sliced)

  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)

  • 1 tbsp light soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 1 tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tsp white pepper

  • 1 cup chicken broth or water

  • Optional: chopped scallions or fried shallots for topping

Instructions:

  • Marinate chicken with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and pepper. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes.

  • In your U-Like claypot, add rinsed rice and chicken broth. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

  • Once boiling, reduce to low heat. Place marinated chicken and Chinese sausage on top of the rice.

  • Cover the claypot and cook for about 15–20 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and has absorbed the liquid.

  • Turn off the heat and let it sit, covered, for another 5 minutes to allow flavours to meld.

  • Stir lightly before serving, mixing the juices into the rice. Garnish with scallions or fried shallots if you like.

That’s it—dinner done in one claypot.

Stews That Simmer with Comfort

Claypots are perfect for making stews because they trap moisture and distribute heat gently and evenly. This allows even tougher cuts of meat to become soft, juicy, and full of flavor without constant stirring. Whether you’re making a hearty beef stew with root vegetables or a light chicken and mushroom mix, the results are always satisfying. With U-Like claypots, you can set it, forget it, and come back to a warm, comforting meal that tastes like it cooked all day.

Curries That Come Together Fast

Curries cook beautifully in U-Like claypots because of the way they retain heat and enhance the slow release of flavors. Starting with sautéed aromatics like onions, garlic, and curry paste, you can build a deeply flavorful base in just minutes. Add in your choice of meat, vegetables, and coconut milk, and let it simmer into a creamy, soul-warming dish. In just half an hour, you’ll have a rich curry that tastes complex but was easy to make in one pot.

Claypot Baked Rice: Crispy, Cheesy Goodness

Claypot baked rice is a crowd-pleaser that’s easier to make than you’d think. Our claypots help the rice cook evenly while forming a crispy, golden crust at the bottom—a signature detail that adds tons of flavor. You can top it with anything from marinated meats to mushrooms or cheese, then finish it in the oven for a bubbly, delicious layer. Whether you prefer traditional soy chicken or bold combos like kimchi and cheese, U-Like claypots bring it all together in one satisfying dish.

FAQs

Clay cookware is considered a healthy option as it is made from natural materials without harmful chemicals. It retains nutrients better than metal pots, offering a healthier way to prepare meals, especially stews and curries. Using a claypot for cooking allows food to retain more vitamins and minerals, giving you a nutritious, flavorful dish.

People cook with clay pots because they are excellent at retaining heat and moisture, allowing food to cook evenly. The slow cooking process enhances flavors, making meals like stews, curries, and baked rice taste richer and more satisfying. Additionally, claypots are versatile, ideal for a variety of dishes from savory to sweet.

If you don’t have a claypot, a heavy-duty Dutch oven or a cast-iron pot can be used as alternatives. These options also retain heat well, though they might not deliver the same subtle flavor enhancement that comes from cooking in a claypot. Still, they are great choices for slow-cooking hearty meals like stews and curries.

Claypot rice pairs well with marinated meats, vegetables, or even seafood, creating a delicious one-pot meal. The rice absorbs the flavors of the ingredients, while the claypot ensures a crispy, flavorful bottom layer. You can also add herbs and spices like soy sauce, garlic, or kimchi to enhance the taste.

Clay dishes are safe to use when they are made from high-quality, lead-free materials. Properly fired and glazed claypots are non-toxic and safe for cooking. However, always ensure that the clay cookware you’re using is food-safe and free from harmful chemicals.

One of the disadvantages of clay pots is their fragility, as they can crack if dropped or exposed to sudden temperature changes. Additionally, claypots require careful seasoning and maintenance, such as avoiding washing them with soap, to maintain their non-stick properties. Cooking in a claypot also takes longer compared to using metal cookware.

The safest cookware materials are non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals. Clay, cast iron, and stainless steel are among the best options, as they don’t leach harmful substances into food. Each of these ingredients retains heat well, making them ideal for slow-cooked meals like stews and curries.

Cookware made from cast iron, stainless steel, and high-quality clay is 100% non-toxic. These materials don’t release chemicals into your food and are safe for everyday cooking. U-Like’s claypots, for example, are designed with natural materials, ensuring a healthy cooking experience.

Clay pots are used to slow-cook food by retaining heat and moisture, which enhances the natural flavors of dishes. They are perfect for preparing flavorful one-pot meals like stews, curries, and rice dishes. The slow cooking process in a claypot ensures that food becomes tender and delicious without losing moisture.

Food tastes better in clay pots because the even heat distribution and moisture retention allow flavors to develop more deeply. Clay also enhances the aroma and richness of stews, curries, and rice dishes, giving them a full-bodied, comforting taste. The cooking process is slower, which results in a more flavorful and tender meal.

Clay pots may emit a natural earthy smell when first used, especially if they haven’t been seasoned properly. This smell generally fades after a few uses or once the claypot is properly cleaned and seasoned. Regular use will reduce the smell over time and allow the pot to retain its natural cooking qualities.

Cooking in a claypot makes a significant difference, particularly in terms of flavor and texture. The heat retention and moisture-locking properties of clay help create richer, more tender meals, especially for slow-cooked dishes like stews and curries. It’s a cooking method that enhances the overall taste of your dishes.

To use a claypot for cooking, start by soaking it in water for about 20 minutes before using it to prevent cracking. Always cook over low to medium heat, gradually bringing the temperature up to allow the pot to heat evenly. After cooking, let the claypot cool down slowly before cleaning it with a soft cloth or brush.

Clay is used in cookware for its excellent heat retention and moisture-locking properties. It helps to evenly cook food, making it tender and flavorful. Additionally, clay is a natural material that doesn’t leach chemicals into your food, ensuring safe, healthy cooking.

Claypots are generally not microwave-safe due to their porous nature and the risk of cracking from sudden temperature changes. It’s best to use them on stovetops or in the oven for optimal results. For microwave-friendly cooking, consider using glass or microwave-safe ceramic cookware instead.
